PMO Leader | Assigning the Right Person to Do the Right Job

8/18/2023

Assigning the right person for the right job ensures the job's success by reducing training costs, avoiding turnovers, and improving productivity. To do so, it's essential for PMO leaders to understand each team member, empower them, and get ready to look for suitable candidates.

Understand
PMO leaders need an in-depth understanding of each team member's strengths, weaknesses, and motivations. The insight can be based on candid discussions and close observations of each member's performance and behaviors. Because people change, PMO leaders need continuous observations for the necessary adjustments. The job assignment should be challenging enough to demand your team members to step out of their comfort zone to learn but not too hard to cause frustrations.

Empower
If no one in the team can do the job, the PMO leader can identify a team member who has the potential and coach him/her to get ready for the assignment.

Find the Right Candidate.
Sometimes we have to find someone from outside for the best result or brining in fresh perspectives.

In summary, PMO leaders make the proper assignment to ensure the best quality of work and efficiency.

Editor's Note:  According to Price's law, 50% of the work is done by the square root of the total number of people participating. Suppose you have a 9-person team, which means you will have 3 out-performers (Type A players). It would help if you give them the right job with the appropriate incentives, then balance workload within the Type B and C players.
