product manager is a unique profession with extensive skill and responsibility requirements. Some companies use them. Some companies restrict the scope. A good product manager can become the CEO of the product; driving the product's ultimate success.

In general, a competent product manager needs to have both technical and business knowledge. On the business side, a product manager needs to have: the marketing skills to find the market fit and plan the product roadmap, the sales skills to define effective pitching and branding stories, and the partner skills to build an ecosystem and enable channel sales. On the technical side, a product manager needs to understand the technology to provide a decent product in time and a good set of features to serve customers. Most importantly, a product managers are usually one of the thought leaders.
