Project Manager | Don't Let Others Underestimated Your Job

8/18/2023

project manager position can be easily underestimated. Not spoken, but many developers and dev managers consider project managers simply handling administrative work. They think project managers don't know how to design products or write codes. It is their job to do the legwork, such as coordinating, booking meetings, taking notes, following up, and producing paperwork. Who can't do those jobs? A person without advanced degrees can take it as long as they have a fair working ethic and are willing to do the hard work. We find this understanding is wrong, and the underestimate is toxic in an organization which causes projects to fail.

Project managers are professionals with advanced operational skills, including planning projects, establishing trust/support with stakeholders, addressing conflicts, and mitigating risks. Project managers are leaders who are responsible for the project's overall success. The project manager inspires team members to ensure success, calibrates the project to strategic directions, and helps the team address issues requiring cross-team collaborations. Project managers are in a manager role.

The project manager and PMO leader need to correct any misunderstandings of the project manager's role and establish a culture respecting project managers as leaders in the project teams.

Editor's Notes: Project managers working on too much legwork could alert incorrect project execution.
