Book | The 80/20 Principle (1999) | Book Summary

10/30/2021

Picture
The 80/20 Principle by Richard Koch explains that both life and business are surprisingly in an unbalanced state: 20% of our work leads to 80% of the outcome; 20% of our customers bring 80% of the profits. Therefore, we don’t need to work with everyone and work on everything. The 80/20 principle suggests reaching out to the 20% most valuable customers, spending time with 20% of people who care about you, and working on the 20% of tasks that lead to 80% of the outcome.

Because of the 80/20 principle, we would rather work smarter than harder.  It reminds there are ways to get things done more efficiently.

Book  | Together Is Better (2016)

10/16/2021

Picture
"Better Together" by Simon Sinek uses the analogy of a children's playground to talk about leadership. The book discusses that the kings of playgrounds who use power to make people surrender are not true leaders. On the contrary, those who help the weak find their talents and work hard to lead everyone to find a better playground are true leaders. This book explains how leaders should take care of others, explore the unknown, get help, overcome obstacles, and ultimately make their vision a reality.

The book is filled with inspiring quotes that explain how a leader cares, inspires, and builds confidence with the team for change. The quote I liked the most is: “Working hard for something we don’t care about is stress. Working hard for something we love is called passion.”

Book | The One Page Project Manager (2007)

10/9/2021

"Your success as a project manger is in direct promotion to your ability to communicate project performance (i.e. scope, timelines, and planned vs. actual resources), current competitions and future expectations." Clark A. Campbell, The One Page Project Manager.
The New One-Page Project Manager by Clark Campbell and Mick Campbell reduces the project plan to a one-page document, a structured report that can track and report the project performance.

Report creation takes 12 steps (summarized in Step 3 - the content matrix) :
  • Project Basics (Step 1): Project Name, Project Manager, Project Objectives, Report Date
  • Objectives (Steps 4): Project objectives
  • Tasks Management (Step 5, 6, 8, 9): tasks name, objectives associated, the schedule of the task, owner/helper to complete the task.
  • Risk Management (Step 10, 8, 9): risk name, the schedule, RAG status  and owner/helper to mitigate the risk.
  • Team Management (Step 2): Owner and helper of the project's tasks (Note: The author suggested using A, B, C to specify the ownership order and recommend that one owner per task is preferred.)
  • Cost Control (Step 11): showing metric for cost measurement
  • Project Date (Step 7): cadence of the report
  • Summary and Forecast (Step 12): overview and forecast for an executive to capture the key message.

The steps covers the essential project management principles. The book also emphasizes that keeping project plan/status transparent to the team and stakeholders is always project managers' top priority.
Editor's Notes (11/9/2021): Now, we can use many advanced tools for project management. Using the spreadsheet-based approach seems outdated, but the concept and critical elements of an project report/tracking remain the same.
