10/22/2022

In "Burn Rate: Launching a Startup and Losing My Mind" by Andy Dunn, an entrepreneur graduated from Northwestern University and build bonobos.com, the author discusses bipolar disorder, which is a mental illness that causes extreme mood swings.

These mood swings can result in emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). While hypomania can drive creativity, productivity, confidence, optimism, and vision, the swing between high and low can lead to a harmful jet-setting lifestyle.

Book | Wabi Sabi by Beth Kempton (2018)

10/8/2022

"Wabi-sabi is a state of the heart and mind, an acceptance of the transient nature of life, and the beauty found in the imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete." - Beth Kempton
Beth Kempton's book "Wabi Sabi: Japanese Wisdom for a Perfectly Imperfect Life" delves into the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi and its application to daily life.

Wabi meaning "to worry," implies a mindset that appreciates simplicity, humility, and frugality. This aligns with minimalism, which encourages us to declutter and focus on what matters.

Sabi means "patina, antique look," which communicates a beauty that comes over time and the transient nature of everything. This reminds us of our impermanence and tells us we must focus on what matters now before it's too late.

Taken together, the combined term wabi-sabi encourages us to embrace acceptance with a worldview that appreciates simple beauty, imperfection, and the transience of all things.

It is worthwhile to delve into the essence of wabi-sabi for a moment and appreciate the beauty in imperfection, transience, and the natural cycle of growth and decay.

Book | Writing That Works (1981)

10/1/2022

Writing That Works; How to Communicate Effectively In Business by Kenneth Roman and Joel Raphaelson is a book about business communication, especially email content.

Written communication is essential for a successful career. It's worthwhile to hear advice on how to make content effective. The book is rated 4.5 out of 5 based on 713 customer reviews. This rating is quite good for a book on business communication.

Business content goes beyond professionalism. The formality of the content needs to be short, clear, friendly, and accessible.
  • Short and clear means the content needs to be straight to the point and concise because people have short attention.
  • Friendly means maintaining a tone like a normal conversation that creates a positive and light-hearted vibe.
  • Accessibility means balancing attention-grabbing and professionalism by keeping the content engaging, starting with the critical objectives, explaining why the content matters, and driving motions with a specific call to action (CAT).
