Empty Raincoat (1994)5/13/2018 Charles B. Handy is named the most influential living management thinkers (Wikipedia). In his book, The Empty Raincoat: Making Sense of the Future, Handy discusses management of paradox which can be grouped into three main categories: The Paradox of Success: what made our success in the past can't ensure our success in the future. We have to make a change even when the current business's profits still increase. (S-Curve). The Paradox of Company: companies can't sustain if only focusing on maximizing the profits. A company should be a small society where people are self-organized in a federal architecture (called corporate federalism). The Paradox of Life: pursuing success doesn't bring real values to life. Finding your historical impact, connecting with society, and working with a great purpose make a meaningful life. All in all, Handy believes that we have to redefine the meaning of business and life to manage the paradoxes. Handy explains our living environment is dynamic and full of uncertainties. "We are not where we hoped to be." Therefore, it's essential to be aware of the paradox first and then search for solutions. “Anything that takes us out of our comfort zones for a while can act as a reminder that the past we are used to may not be our best future.”- Charles B. Handy, The Empty Raincoat
