What is it about? The 100-Year Life: Living and Working in an Age of Longevity (2017) by Lynda Gratton and Andrew Scott talks about why we need to make changes after our life gets longer and longer.

Why bother? Know the changes and help us plan our life differently.

Key Ideas The book summarized the old 3-stage life: growing up (0-20), working(20-60), and retirement (60-) will not work for people who live longer than 100 years. The author suggests us to planning our life differently because of medical advancements, including:
  • Planning a 4-5-stages of life instead of 3 and re-creating ourselves with improvements and embracing the new things
  • Improving communications between different ages
  • Preparing to make multiple choices during the lifetime
A life well-lived requires careful planning to balance the financial and the non-financial, the economic and the psychological, the rational and the emotional.

Interesting Fact Every decade since 1840, life expectancy has increased by two to three years. So if a child born in 2007 has a 50 percent probability of living to 104, then a child born a decade earlier (1997) has a 50% chance of reaching 101 or 102; a decade earlier (1987), the range is 98 to 100; a decade earlier (1977) 95 to 98; for 1967 it is to 92 to 96; a decade earlier still (1957) the range is 89 to 94, and so on.
