Driving an Electronic Car

7/17/2022

Electric cars, also known as EVs, run on electricity instead of fossil fuels. They offer numerous benefits, including zero tailpipe emissions, energy efficiency, lower operating costs, and government tax rebate incentives.

Cost Saving
Let's consider an example calculation of cost savings with an electric vehicle (EV) compared to a traditional gasoline-powered car. Please note that actual savings may vary depending on various factors, such as electricity and fuel prices, driving habits, and vehicle efficiency.

Assumptions:
1. Average annual mileage: 12,000 miles.
2. Gasoline car fuel efficiency: 30 miles per gallon (mpg).
3. Gasoline price: $3.00 per gallon.
4. Electric car efficiency: 4 miles per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
5. Electricity price: $0.12 per kWh.
6. Average cost of charging equipment installation: $500.

Calculation:
1. Gasoline car annual fuel consumption: 12,000 miles / 30 mpg = 400 gallons.
  Fuel cost: 400 gallons x $3.00/gallon = $1,200.
2. Electric car annual electricity consumption: 12,000 miles / 4 miles per kWh = 3,000 kWh.
  Electricity cost: 3,000 kWh x $0.12/kWh = $360.
3. Annual savings: $1,200 (gasoline car fuel cost) - $360 (electric car electricity cost) = $840.
4. Additional savings:
  - Reduced maintenance and repair costs: EVs generally have fewer moving parts and require less maintenance, leading to potential savings on oil changes, transmission repairs, etc.
  - Potential tax incentives and rebates: Some governments offer incentives for purchasing EVs, such as tax credits or rebates, which can further reduce the overall cost of ownership.

While EVs may have higher upfront costs, the potential long-term cost savings from fuel and maintenance can make them a more economical choice over time.

Stress-Free Charging
One of the key considerations for electric car owners is the availability and convenience of charging infrastructure. As the charging infrastructure is rapidly expanding, recharging is becoming more convenient. It's also easy to build a home charging station that allows electric car owners to conveniently recharge their vehicles overnight. Because charging a hybrid car is more seamless and stress-free, starting with a hybrid vehicle is also an excellent option.

Electric cars also provide quick acceleration, a smooth ride, and a quieter driving experience. Embracing electric vehicles is crucial to reducing our carbon footprint and creating a cleaner planet. Enjoy the ride.
Editor's Note (2023/1/2): If you bought a new, qualified plug-in electric vehicle (EV), you may be eligible for a clean vehicle tax credit of up to $7,500 under Internal Revenue Code Section 30D. Check IRS for more details.

Sukee's Notes: I started driving my first electric car, a BMW X4 xDrive45e, in July 2022. The car is a hybrid that takes the stress out of charging while enjoying the ease and quietness of entering an electronic driving mode. (Status: completed as July 2022)
