Chat | Winner and Learner: A New Way of Looking at Competition

3/20/2022

I read something about a human competition in a society-centric environment recently. People tend to be competitive by nature. Although not a zero-sum game, competition exists because we need to gain resources required for our growth. This brought the Winner-Learner concept to my mind, which is a very interesting one.

The Winner-Learner concept redefines the traditional notions of success and failure, emphasizing growth and resilience in every endeavor. This mindset distinguishes between winners and learners, focusing on winning as achieving goals and learning as gaining insights from experiences. It doesn't perceive any outcome as a defeat. This philosophy is pivotal across various sectors, including business, where it fosters innovation and risk-taking, education, which emphasizes lifelong learning over mere grades, and sports, where the focus is on personal improvement rather than just victories.

This philosophy is reflected in quotes from influential figures, such as Nelson Mandela's "I never lose. I either win or learn," which underscores the essence of constant learning. Carol S. Dweck, in her work on growth mindset, emphasizes the value of embracing flaws as opportunities for improvement. Legendary coach John Wooden's words, "Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be," stresses the importance of adaptability. And Henry Ford’s perspective, "The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing," aligns with viewing every attempt as a learning opportunity.

Adopting this mindset enables individuals and organizations to cultivate cultures of innovation, resilience, and continual self-improvement, turning every experience into a step towards growth and development.

Make Life Simple

3/6/2022

I have been a loyal reader of Really Simple for 10 years. I love it to remind me to "find exclusive tips, tricks, and ideas to make life easier every day." The concept is excellent. Why not make our life easier?

We have an easier life when we set the right expectation. It's often us who bother ourselves the most. Demanding so much, expecting high, comparing with others, seeking approvals... all these complicate everything. Like hummingbirds won't bother doing the same thing as eagles, there is no need to look up someone and do what's beyond our limits. Well, hearing people say dream big? Yes, I do. I would try it with my best efforts, but I also know I have limits.

Prepare made easy.
Hey, let me know if someone says the same thing to you. My mom always reminded me "be prepared" when she was with me years ago. Now, I still hear her words. Preparation makes things easy. Prepare food for the coming week on Sundays. Organize the work in the morning by listing the top things to do. Plan your next big move by learning all you need to know to do a dam good job... be prepared.

Take your time.
When it was the last time, you sit around with your family and friends chatting, relaxing, and laughing along with them. If you don't remember when it is, schedule one next. Take time on everything and add enjoyable moments down the road. It eventually matters the most.

Stop pleasing people.
If we care nothing about people around us, it's impolite. If we care too much about people around us, it's a burden. Smile, but don't smile too much. Help but don't help unless there is a need. Do the good job and get recognized, but don't eager to seek appraisals. We struggle with relationships when we demand too much from ourselves and others.

Do you live a simple life?
