Things To Do | World Earth Day (April 22)

4/21/2024

Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22nd and serves as a day to honor the Earth and promote awareness about environmental issues. First observed in 1970, it was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson to encourage education and action towards environmental protection. The day marked a pivotal point in modern environmental activism, leading to greater public awareness and the eventual passage of significant environmental legislation, including the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts in the United States.

Each year, Earth Day centers around a specific theme to address pressing environmental issues, such as climate change, plastic pollution, and conservation efforts. For example, the 2024 theme is Planet vs Plastics. The theme aims to bring attention to the serious issue of plastic pollution and how it harms nature. "Can we start reusing the same shopping bag every time we go shopping? Is it possible to use natural and organic materials, such as paper envelopes, glass or ceramic jars, or bamboo plates?" The 2025 theme is on renewable energy.

Chat | Why Do We Talk?

4/15/2024

Have you ever wondered why we're so drawn to conversations? Picture yourself at a holiday party. Conversations are flowing all around. It seems simple, right? But there's more to it than meets the eye. Let's take a closer look.

Think of conversations as a stage. Here, we display our wit, intelligence, and social status. It's a strategic dance, a way to build prestige and allies, showcasing our worthiness and knowledge, as 'The Elephant in the Brain' so brilliantly explains.

Why do we dive so deep into these interactions, aiming to impress and make a mark? It all comes down to one thing: human connections. We're wired to form alliances, create lasting impressions, and judge others based on bravery, generosity, and even physical fitness. However, the most important aspect of building strong connections is our communication skills. It's essential to avoid mumbling, stuttering, or speaking in a scatterbrained manner, as these habits can hinder our ability to gain leadership and influence others.

Here's the heart of it: Conversing isn't just about exchanging facts or sharing information. It's about creating an unforgettable presence. It's how we build our prestige, forge powerful alliances, and leave our mark on the social world.

In essence, when we converse, we're not just building prestige and allies. We're also striving to impress and impact our social circles. It's like weaving a rich tapestry of human interaction, where every word adds to our shared narrative.

So next time you're in a conversation, remember, we’re part of this intricate web of human interaction. Every word, every exchange, it all counts.

Things To Do | National Garden Day (April 14)

4/14/2024

National Gardening Day is celebrated every year on April 14th. It was established by Cool Springs Press in 2018 to encourage people of all skill levels to share their knowledge and passion for gardening. The day promotes getting involved in gardening as a way to connect with nature, improve mental health, and physically engage in nurturing plant life. Whether you're an experienced gardener or just starting out, National Gardening Day is the perfect opportunity to begin planting and preparing your garden for the summer. Here are some ideas I want to do today:
  • Find a local nursery for some plants and spend sometime in the garden.
  • Read a book on gardening
  • Cook a dish using something fresh from the garden

Chat | Live like a Duck

4/7/2024

Today, We want to discuss the concept of living like a duck. When we observe ducks swimming in a lake, they appear to be effortlessly gliding across the surface. However, beneath the water, their little feet are paddling rapidly. We often use this analogy to emphasize that people are working hard, even if we cannot see it. We only witness their accomplishments and their seemingly easy lives, but we don't know the effort and hard work they put in.

We all know there is no free lunch or easy way to succeed. We have to work hard to achieve what we want. This is especially true when we are young. The more hard work we do, the better foundation we lay for our future. It's not just about saving money for the future but also about gaining skills and knowledge, connecting with people, and learning from our mistakes. The more we struggle when we are young, the more we will grow and mature. This helps us to prepare for the tough times in life.

We often say that we work hard for others to see our achievements, but we should work hard for ourselves. Like ducks, we should do the hard work for ourselves, and for others, we should appear calm and relaxed. By doing this, we hide our efforts from others and avoid jealousy or being seen as a threat. This way, we can work hard, like the duck paddling under the water's surface.
