Framework Thinking

7/25/2023

‘Great Minds Think Alike” - An old saying
The unique ability to think before acting differentiates humans from other species. However, there are many occasions when we need more time to think things through or the issue is too complex or misleading, which may easily lead to biases or wrong decisions. In such moments, we would rely on some thinking frameworks built on top of the collective wisdom of our predecessors. We define these frameworks as thinking systems built on top of mental models.

The framework can save us time, allowing us to quickly analyze and assess situations and make informed decisions with deeper insights. These frameworks let us remain in control when under high pressure by enabling us to think clearly and communicate our thoughts clearly and logically for maximum effectiveness, especially when under high pressure. The frameworks can also prevent errors and biases. As the old saying goes, "When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." Our limited viewpoints and biases can obstruct our judgment. Using a framework, we can think beyond our usual boundaries, broaden our outlook, and be more thoughtful, mainly when dealing with intricate circumstances and demanding difficult decisions.

During my MBA studies, I discovered that a significant part of education involves learning various thinking frameworks such as the 3C3P model for market analysis, Porter's Five and SWOT for competition assessment, and the value chain analysis for supplier evaluations. Here, we have compiled a collection of useful thinking frameworks or mental models including:
  1. Seeing the Bigger Picture
  2. Influencing Others without Formal Authority
  3. Improving Efficiency
  4. Crafting Project Closing Communications
  5. Leading Successful Meetings
  6. Implementing Changes
  7. Assessing Change Management Initiatives
  8. Embracing Technology Innovations
One more thing before we step away: We know that knowing mathematical and physical formulas isn't enough to truly master a subject. "Having a hammer doesn't make you a carpenter." To master framework thinking, we must continuously practice their applications in real-life scenarios and use them flexibly to reap their benefits.
Editor's Notes: The practice of framework thinking is important not just for its speed, but also to avoid the "we know it all" mentality that can hinder us. This mindset may cause us to overlook problems that arise from our biases or limitations and prevent us from gaining new insights.

Excercise Injury

7/20/2023

6/18 7:30am I merely started playing a Pickleball game with my friends. A ball came and was about to fall in the kitchen. I ran forward to reach out but immediately felt like I was losing control. I fall and hurt my arm with muscle pull and strain. I can't move. I hurt myself. After that, I couldn't move for 3-4 weeks and discovered recovering from the injury was even more challenging. I have to take a week off due to difficulty sleeping when feeling nerve discomfort.

Now, a big lesson learns: exercise is undeniably beneficial for our health, but it also carries the potential for injury or damage to our well-being. Just like anything else, exercise has both positive and negative aspects. This made me remember last year at Zion National Park. While traveling on the Narrows through the Virgin River, I found an old lady who fell and hurt severely. She didn't rent the professional booth nor carry any recommended sticks. The situation is terrible because no call can be made from inside. People have to run out to get 911. We have to protect ourselves from any sport.

Talking about workouts protection,  we need to gradually warm up with stretching, take sufficient rest breaks during the session, and cool down afterward. These precautions have been emphasized by many experts, highlighting their significance. Pushing ourselves too hard without allowing our bodies to adapt can lead to strains, sprains, and even more severe conditions. Recognizing the signs of overtraining and listening to our bodies to avoid such mishaps is crucial.

So lace up our shoes, take a deep breath, and embark on a safer and healthier exercise together.

Things to Do | National Ice Cream Day (3rd Sunday of July)

7/16/2023

National Ice Cream Day in the United States is the third Sunday of July every year (7/16 in 2023). In 1984, President Ronald Reagan declared July National Ice Cream Month and designated the third Sunday of July National Ice Cream Day. Ice Cream Day is a special day to celebrate ice cream, allowing people to enjoy the refreshing treat in the hot summer weather and commemorate this delightful dessert.

Currently, there are various flavors of ice cream to choose from, such as chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, mint chocolate, and more. You can also indulge in creative ice cream desserts like ice cream sundaes, ice cream cakes, ice cream rolls, and ice cream sandwiches. There are also multiple ways to celebrate Ice Cream Day. You can create your favorite flavors, or explore local ice cream shops to try their unique offerings.

Here are some famous ice cream shops in Austin where you can taste delicious ice creams.
  1.  Amy's Ice Creams: Amy's Ice Creams is one of Austin's most popular local ice cream chains.Website: amysicecreams.com Rating: 5 stars
  2. Museum of Ice Cream: The Museum of Ice Cream is a non-traditional art exhibition space focused on interactive experiences around ice cream. This conceptual museum originated in the United States and aimed to create joyful and blissful experiences by interacting with art, games, and ice cream. Website: museumoficecream.com
  3. Gelatoro Gelato & Coffee & Bakery: Italian Gelato is a globally renowned style of ice cream from Italy. It has a unique texture and flavor compared to traditional ice cream. Italian Gelato is typically made using fresh, high-quality ingredients such as fresh cream, milk, fruits, chocolate, and nuts. This results in a rich and creamy taste with a smooth and silky texture. Compared to traditional ice cream, Italian Gelato contains less fat and air, making it more intense and delicate. Website: gelatoro.com Rating: 5 stars
  4. Dip Dip Dip: At Dip Dip Dip, they offer a unique and interactive dining experience centered around hot pot. While primarily focusing on hot pot dishes, they also have delightful ice cream options to complement your meal. You can enjoy it as a dessert after indulging in the hot pot experience. When it comes to ice cream, it is indeed important to consume it in moderation due to its high sugar content and cholesterol. If you have diabetes or other health concerns, you can consider alternatives like frozen yogurt, shaved ice, or sorbets. Remember to indulge in moderation and stay cool during the hot summer months. Happy National Ice Cream Day!
Action: Go to an ice cream shop with your family and friends to taste delicious ice cream. If you can't have something too sweet, choose frozen yogurt or some small shaved ice treats to cool down.

ChatGPT: How AI Can Improve Productivity

7/4/2023

Since its emergence in November 2022, ChatGPT has sparked both excitement and concerns. Whether you love or hate it, the revolutionary AI application can transform people's lives by significantly improving our productivity. We will examine six use cases. Each comes with example ChatGPT prompts and downloadable iOS shortcuts.

Copy Editing was expensive before ChatGPT. The price for a few hundred words can range from tens to hundreds of dollars (approximately $0.02 to $0.2 per word). Even a yearly Grammarly subscription costs up to $150! ChatGPT provides an affordable solution for copy editing. We can use it for wordsmithing, grammar checking, and rewriting. The outcomes are very impressive. To get the best result, we can create a dedicated chat named "Channel-Copy Editing." and training ChatGPT  to understand the desired writing style. The chat channel can then be used for future editing demands.

Learning Assistance means using ChatGPT for learning. We can ask ChatGPT to create book reviews and recommendations or find relevant information. It can also be an excellent tutor helping with our studies, homework, and even teaching like a teacher.

Personal assistants can help with various tasks, such as organizing our schedule, making travel arrangements, giving fitness and nutrition advice, recommending cooking recipes, setting reminders, assisting with decision-making, or offering financial guidance. ChatGPT can also act like a life coach, offering advice and prompting self-reflection for personal growth and mental well-being.

Role Play refers to asking ChatGPT to role-play a person with a particular personality and social background. This practice allows us to practice communication skills in various social scenarios, including mock interviews.

Coding with ChatGPT can assist with coding and programming challenges. It is now very handy for creating code in JavaScript, Python, and Excel.

Creating Content Creating Content lets ChatGPT generate creative ideas, brainstorm sessions, and offer suggestions for different writing projects. ChatGPT can generate Content for various purposes like articles, blog posts, social media captions, product descriptions, etc.

As we continue to explore its capabilities, we can discover more ways to leverage ChatGPT to enhance our daily lives and achieve our goals. However, despite its power, ChatGPT also has limitations. Because it's built upon a large language model (LLM), a text-based machine learning (transformer neural network) algorithm, ChatGPT needs more real-world understanding, especially models like math or map. It also has difficulty differentiating irrelevant information in the prompt. The limitation of the training data can also cause biased answers and wrong results. Therefore, it remains a tool for now. We have to make our judgments on the quality of the responses.
Editor's Note (7/8/2023):  As Artificial Intelligence continues advancing, we need to be open to its many benefits. Thanks to AI-generated summaries, we can quickly get answers to questions such as what a book
is about, the main ideas, and even some favorite quotes. Our reading blog has taken a step further by encouraging our readers to use AI-generated summaries before reading our blogs, which now provide thought-provoking questions for teatime discussions. If you'd like to try ChatGPT's prompt, join the conversation here and share the book titles and authors to generate new summaries.
