Chat | Journaling - A Tool More for Meditation than Productivity

9/29/2024

Journaling is a mindful practice of self-discovery that involves writing to ourselves. Setting aside a few minutes each day to explore our thoughts, reactions to the world, and emotions is beneficial.

Journaling is a great way to improve our self-awareness. Writing down our thoughts and feelings helps us reflect on them and gain mental clarity. Additionally, journaling can be a helpful tool for maintaining emotional well-being. It allows us to release negative experiences and move forward with a positive attitude. Through consistent writing, we can also improve our communication skills by articulating our thoughts and refining our expression to the world.

We can group journals into three categories: thoughts journal, capturing things that come to our mind; experiences journal, recording learning and various activities in life; and self-management journal, which organizes life for better planning and time management.
  • Thought journals include diaries, blogs, and commonplace books, where we fill the pages with reflections, quotes, and ideas.
  • Experience journals are a gateway to personal growth, expanding into exciting areas such as travel journals that inspire us to explore new places, reading or story journals that enlighten us with wisdom from the past, people journals that help us understand and appreciate those we meet, gratitude journals that foster a deeper sense of appreciation, handwriting journals that teach us new fonts, shopping journals that celebrate healthy and delightful product encounters, cooking journals that encourage us to experiment with new dishes, zen journals that record our spiritual growth, and more. We also use sketching journals and nature journals to record our observations of the world around us. Life is a journey of growth and discovery, and we use journals to remember and appreciate the experiences that shape us.
  • Self-management journals are journals that give guidance. Bulletin journals fall into this category.
The key to a helpful journal is consistency, honesty with oneself, and offloading our minds. We use journaling for high-level task tracking, such as what we stand for (core values), how we feel each day, topics we have an interest in or are inspired to know more about, what hurts us, what we wish to do, and lessons learned.
Editor's Notes (3/24/2019): Bull journaling differs from traditional journaling. When people talk about bullet journaling, they refer to it as a productive tool to get things done or prevent procrastination. It's more like a to-do list we can track, migrate, and plan. However, some people need help with monitoring tasks with a pen-and-paper system. A task reminder in Evernote (replaced by Apple Notes as of 2024) is sufficient.

Zen | Minimalism

9/22/2024

Minimalism is about living with less. It has become a popular living style. We surely will meet someone who likes the concept. Having some basic knowledge and fascinating stories will help us understand them, connect with them, or even become one of them.

Why minimalism
Minimalism is attractive because we can notice many benefits after applying it in our lives. The lifestyle allows us to stay present and save money, time, and energy to focus on the most important things.

Minimized possessions can foster happiness because buying too many things relies on the stress and burdens of possession. When we unwisely fill our house with junk, we also have to spend time and energy considering where to keep all the stuff, maintain it, and even get rid of it becomes a tough decision.

Minimalism is also about not overthinking. Overthinking can affect our judgment and cause stress.

Who is well-known as a minimalist
Frank Stella is known as the first minimalist. "Minimalism emerged in the late 1950s when artists such as Frank Stella, whose Black Paintings were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1959, began to turn away from the gestural art of the previous generation."

Steve Jobs is also a famous minimalist with a simple dress code and lifestyle and a company that follows a unique minimalist culture. From 1998 to 2010, he consistently wore a black turtleneck, jeans, and a sneaker for the corporate announcements.

Google's one search bar interface is also a representation of minimalism.

How to become a minimalist
For those interested in adopting the lifestyle, there is one book and one website that you will want to take advantage of.

Danshari (断舍离) was published in 2009 by Yamashita Hideko. The title is in Japanese, meaning "refuse," "dispose," and "separate." Refuse means not buying something you need. Minimalism suggests buying only for three reasons: buy something to make life easier, make it happier, or bring unique experiences. Dispose of all unused stuff—separate means detaching things from our life. The yoga practice concept was created by Oki Masahiro (1921-1985).

Theminimalists.com has many exciting suggestions, such as: How many items do you need to live as a minimalist?

How to practice minimalism
When talking about minimalism practices, we collected some exciting topics.

To refuse...
  • One in One Out means not buying a new item if the old one is still in use.
  • Buy the 1st option with high quality within the most demand. Otherwise, you will end up buying more if you compromise.
To dispose of...
  • Minimizing the Living Room: Consider removing pillows, rugs, and unread books.
  • Minimizing the closets: removing clothes that do not spark joy or haven't been worn for one year and sticking to a simple dressing style.
  • Minimizing kitchen: Remove items paying expiration date, use tools for at most one year, or have duplicates.
  • We can take pictures of the gift without use and then let them go.
  • It's difficult to dispose of because of endowment bias. One tip from Sasaki Fumio(佐佐木) is, "If you think of getting rid of one thing five times, then let it go."
There are no correct answers to becoming a minimalist. Therefore, you will have much fun chatting with others about their understanding and practices.
Editor's Note (10/1/2023): We recommend applying minimalism to project management, such as:
  • introducing minimum standardization overheads when managing a task
  • minimizing meetings, so they are scheduled only when needed and within minimum time
  • creating reports with minimum information that can tell the story
  • Minimizing team size by only inviting those who can contribute

Chat | How to Be a Fun Person to Work With

9/15/2024

Project managers are stitchers who connect, communicate, and motivate the crew. We need skills to start a fun and engaging conversation. Here, we share seven basic tricks to make yourself fun to work with: be knowledgeable, relax, take your time 20% talk and 80% listen, ask questions, tell stories, and pause.

Be Knowledgeable. You can't fake your appeals; therefore, your knowledge and experience will naturally attract.

Relax means feeling safe and comfortable. Only when you get into this mood are you natural and authentic? We can't fake to be fun. So relax and be ourselves first.

Take your time. A fun person is also a confident person who can control time. They walk at their own pace. They speak based on their speed. They let others wait to hear what they want to say and watch what they plan to do.

20% talk, and 80% listen, saying people feel fun talking, especially about themselves. Therefore, please encourage others to speak with eye contact and acknowledgment. The surprising outcome is that they will think you are the most fun person to be around after the engagement.

Ask questions shows your genuine curiosity about others and their topics. How do we control the discussion? Use questions- great questions. Here are some good ones:
  • Ask for a plan: What is your next travel destination? What do you plan to do this weekend?
  • Ask for past experiences: What did you do at this time last year? Do you like it?
  • Notice changes and ask for information: You have a new <look|car|hobby>. What's your consideration?
  • Ask for action details: How did you do it?
  • Ask for consideration details: Why did you choose to do this?

Tell stories trigger the audience's imagination. Good storytelling describes the place, people, and feelings to picture vivid visuals in people's minds and emotions in the story. People will remember these visuals and emotions longer and thus recognize who told the story. Giving unexpected results can always amaze the audience.

Pause reminds you to stop when you want people to digest or wait for them to respond. Pausing is essential because you control your time. People will realize it and remember whom they follow up with during the conversation.

Take time to try these suggestions and see if they help you expand your social connections.ns.
Editor's Notes (11/19/2021): "It's fun to work with you." is a great complement for any project manager or PMO leader. The first step of influencing is Liking. Only after people like you will they support and listen to your suggestions. The essence of a fun person to work with is confidence, knowledge, and willingness to help and entertain others. On the other hand, you have to be a fun person first. It's tough to fake it.  We recommend you read more, visit new places, meet new people, and collect fascinating stories.

Zen | Manifestation,  Visualization, and Law of Attraction

9/8/2024

We discussed the Law of Attraction sometime ago. Today, let's discuss its relationship between manifestation and visualization. In personal development and spiritual growth, all of three concepts are often connected to achieving one's desires.

The Law of Attraction is the philosophical principle suggesting that similar energies attract each other. Positive thoughts attract positive results, while negative thoughts might attract undesirable outcomes. The law of attraction is often cited as the underlying mechanism explaining manifestation and visualization's effectiveness. By maintaining a positive mindset and emotionally resonant visions of success, individuals are thought to attract the circumstances and opportunities necessary to achieve their goals.

Manifestation refers to the process of bringing one's desires or goals into reality through focused intention and belief advocated by Neville Goddard. It is an overarching term that encapsulates various techniques, including positive thinking or affirmations, visualization, meditation, and employing the law of attraction and gratification. The core idea behind manifestation is that aligning one's thoughts and energies with desired outcomes makes it possible to actualize them in the real world.

Visualization is a specific technique used within the broader practice of manifestation. This method involves creating mental images or scenarios that depict one's goals as already achieved. By regularly engaging in visualization, individuals can focus their intentions and foster a mental environment where success feels attainable and vivid. Visualization acts as a mental rehearsal, preparing the mind and spirit to embrace and work towards the visualized outcomes.

We can use these concepts to navigate our personal and professional lives include the efforts to improve health, achieve career success, or foster personal relationships. The practices help shape our destiny consciously.

To explore this topic further, we recommend the following books:
  • Mind to Matter: The Astonishing Science of How Your Brain Creates Material Reality by Dawson Church
  • Don't Believe Everything You Think: Why Your Thinking Is The Beginning & End Of Suffering by Joseph Nguyen
  • Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One by Dr. Joe Dispenza
  • Becoming Supernatural: How Common People Are Doing the Uncommon by Dr. Joe Dispenze
  • The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle
  • Signs: The Secret Language of the Universe by Laura Lynne Jackson.
  • Why Buddhism Is True: The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment, by Robert Wright
No matter you believe in that series or not, it is a series that you will not miss to know for personal development.
